Chapter 3

When Garrett opened his eyes again, light filled the room. All the white snow reflected brightness, despite the slate-gray sky. He briefly remembered how, as a kid, that particular clarity of light had often been his first clue to snowfall and a likely day off from school.

“Morning.” Her soft voice glided along his skin.

“Morning,” he rasped, his body suddenly, achingly, aroused. Even the fleeting thought of her small hand wrapping around him nearly made him lose it.

Taking a deep breath, he closed his eyes and desperately tried to think of something else besides how sexy she looked in the morning, her red curls tousled as if she’d just tumbled from his arms.

He failed miserably. Deciding he had to move, he unzipped his sleeping bag enough to sit up and reached for his cell phone. Checking emails and for potential texts would ground him.

But the phone showed he had no signal. Which wouldn’t be good. He needed to be able to receive updates on the Pittses’ location and/or possible recapture.

He swore softly under his breath. “Are you able to use your cell phone here?” he asked.

Looking up from changing the baby’s diaper, she shook her head. “No. Because this cabin sits in a valley, I had to walk up that hill behind us to get a signal. That’s about the only place I could.”

“On top of a hill?” He didn’t bother to hide his disbelief. “How am I going to keep in touch with my team?”

She shrugged as she placed little Caleb back in his crib. “I guess you’ll have to go outside and climb up the hill. I have one bit of good news. Though it’s still snowing, the wind appears to have let up, at least for now.”

Standing, he avoided looking at her. He stretched and crossed to peer out the window. Nothing but dazzling whiteness, as far as the eye could see.

“I wonder how much of that is ice?” she said from too close behind him.

Aware his frustration was disproportionate to the situation, he swallowed and kept his back to her. “After I wake up a bit more, I’ll go check it out. Do you have any coffee? Even instant will do.” Or would have to, since the electricity hadn’t come back on.

“I have tea,” she offered, not sounding the least bit apologetic. “I can boil water on the stove. Or if you’d rather have something else, there’s Diet Coke in the fridge. Though it might be warm now. As a matter of fact...” Her voice took on a worried edge. “There’s going to be some spoilage. At least I have powdered formula to mix with water. But I wonder if the remaining eggs will be okay to eat this morning. I’d planned to make scrambled eggs for breakfast.”

“That depends on how cold it is inside your fridge.” He turned so fast she stumbled back. Instinctively, he reached to steady her, meaning to just grab her arm until she was okay. Instead, he wound up hauling her up against him, chest to chest.
